It sounds like an agreement to allow legal sports betting Connecticut could only be a few days away.
Governor Ned Lamont said negotiations with that Mashantucket Pequot are on “a tenth of [the] 1 inch line ”during a COVID-19 update Monday.
Lamont’s office had previously announced an agreement to expand gambling with just that Mohegan Indians. An agreement with both tribal game operators is required to advance CT sports betting and iGaming.
That bilateral announcement left Mashantucket Chairman Pequot behind Rodney Butler and others a bit upset, though it seems the differences are almost resolved.
Sports betting announcement in Connecticut this week?
There appear to be two disagreements that prevented the operating Mashantucket Pequot Foxwoods, from consent, as the Mohegan did.
The first was a dispute over the iGaming tax, which has now been resolved. chief of staff Paul Mounds said there is a “firm agreement” with all parties about it.
The Mashantucket Pequot brought up an unspecified second subject in negotiation that the tribe is discussing with the Mohegan, Mounds said. Those talks should lead to “some progressive and very positive news,” he added.
“We look forward to delivering the full plan in the coming days,” said Mounds.
Details of the CT Gaming Expansion Agreement
It is unclear what Mounds meant by the “full plan” as the details were revealed when the governor’s office announced the agreement with the Mohegan:
- Income from sports betting is also taxed 13.75%. Mohegan entered into a partnership camp for sports betting two years ago, while the Mashantucket Pequot announced a deal with DraftKings in the December.
- The Connecticut lottery can work 15th Retail sports betting locations and an online betting skin. This includes two new sports betting venues in Bridgeport and Hartford.
- Sports may also get involved if the lottery decides to sub-license some of these retail stores to the OTB operator.
- The iGaming tax was announced on 20%. It’s unclear if this will change as this was an issue with the Mashantucket Pequot.
“I wouldn’t say it was one side or the other,” Mounds said.
